A Day Trip to Portland, Maine.

Kraig and I recently took a day trip to Portland, Maine to check out some restaurants and breweries.  We decided to split our meals, so we would have the appetite to sample more restaurants in one day.

We started with lunch at the Portland Lobster Company.  We ordered the lobster roll and clam chowder.  The lobster was fresh and they didn’t use globs of Mayo, but it wasn’t the best lobster roll I’ve ever had. The clam chowder seemed to be lacking in clams and seasoning. You have a nice view there and the food is fresh, so it’s worth the trip!

Afterward, we walked around town for a bit.

Then we went to a FREE beer tasting at Allagash Brewery.  Each person gets four free brewery selected samples and you can opt in or out for a tour of the brewery. I was quite impressed when we arrived at Allagash because it looked similar to arriving to a wine vineyard.  Allagash White is probably the first “fancy” beer I started to drink when I was in college.  I don’t typically order it nowadays, but it was a fun experience to check out the brewery and sample some of their other beers.

Next up, was a casual tasting at The Rising Tide Brewery.  There were food trucks outside the brewery and an industrial feel to this location.

After the breweries, we headed back into town. Round one of dinner was at Eventide Oyster Co. We shared delicious oysters hand selected by our waitress and their melt in your mouth, mouthwatering lobster roll.

That drink below is a Cava Bloody Mary. It was a fun spin on the traditional Bloody Mary.

Round two of dinner was at Duckfat. We of course got an order of their Belgian fries and the House Smoked Brisket Panini. This food was apparently too good to wait and take a picture of because I have no photos. 🙂 It was a really casual, cozy, atmosphere with wonderful comfort food meets hipster.  Not sure what the real word for that is in the foodie world.

We had a lot of fun checking out Portland.  Where are your favorite day trip locations in New England?

More Lush Please.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’ve developed a bit of a Lush obsession in the past year. I wanted to share with you my two favorite body washes by Lush that will take your shower experience to another level.

IMG_5407

First up is The Olive Branch Shower Gel (available here). This stuff smells so amazing and I especially love using it on a hot summer day. Instead of smelling like sweat on a hot day in Boston, I can smell the actual shower gel radiating from my body.  I find this creepily enjoyable as I huff my arm walking outside on a hot sunshiny day in the city.

Next up is the Limited Edition Yummy Mummy Shower Cream (available here). I LOVE this stuff. I bought it in the smallest sample size off their website and instantly fell in love with it upon first shower. I just love the way it smells and how it leaves my skin feeling moisturized. I didn’t realize this was a limited edition item, so I went to the Lush location in Harvard Square to get a large bottle. The salesperson there told me that this was a Limited Edition item for Mother’s Day and they didn’t have any left. I was so sad, but instantly went home to bulk order 2 large bottles and a travel size off the website. 🙂 So the crisis was averted until those run out.

I would suggest ordering these in their smallest travel size before committing to a large bottle of it. I also wouldn’t suggest these two items for people that do not like scented body wash. It’s also worth taking a trip to one of their stores in person to sniff everything in sight. I sure did have fun with this,  but also think reading the customer reviews online is extremely important too. It’s nice that they’re a honest company that will keep negative reviews on their website.

I currently rent an apartment that comes with a peeling bathtub bottom, so taking a bath there is out of the question. I seriously look forward to the day that I have a good bathtub to use a Lush bath bomb in.

Have any of you tried Lush?

My Favorite Fitness Channels on YouTube.

Is anyone else obsessed with YouTube like me? I LOVE it. I have two shaky videos from Iceland posted on my channel, but I’ve been thinking/hoping to add more better quality videos in the future.

I think I go on YouTube almost everyday to get in my at home daily workout. I decided to round up some of my favorite Fitness YouTubers in this post.

First up is Yoga With Adriene. This Texan Yogi is my favorite. Adriene is so down to earth in her videos and makes you feel like you’re one of her friends. Her mantra is Find What Feels Good which I strongly believe in and love. She loves to allude to jokes about drinking whisky, throwing in a Hey-o, talking about her dog Benji, and encouraging Yogis to go at their own speed.

My other favorite fitness channel on YouTube is Tone It Up. Karena and Katrina know how to kick your booty into shape. I see the best results in my body when I follow the Tone It Up workout calendar religiously.  I don’t always do that because it interferes with Adriene’s  mantra to listen to your body. So I typically do a mixture of these two channels as my regular workouts.  They have great HIIT, weighted workouts, and kettle toning.

Two other noteworthy YouTubers are Blogilates and SarahBethYoga.  They both have great videos for free! I did Blogilates to get into shape for my wedding and honeymoon.  At my wedding, my friends complimented me on how great my back looked in my strapless dress. I suffer from scoliosis, so this was a great compliment to receive! I basically do SarahBethYoga when I feel like it. She has a really great video for shoulder and neck pain that you can get to by clicking here. In addition to that, she has a whole playlist on it too!

I hate running so much, so I like doing these yoga, pilates, weight training, and HIIT videos on YouTube for my exercise. It’s great that they can all be done from the comfort of your own home and don’t require paying for a gym membership.  I quit my gym this year because every time I went there was no room anywhere to do my free weights. In addition to that, there would usually be a wait to get the weights I needed.  I get a better workout following these videos for free! It’s also great because your workout time is less since you aren’t spending time commuting to/from a gym. I will admit that I miss going to the Yoga Studio in person, but spending over $100/month on a Yoga Membership just isn’t realistic for me right now.

Do any of you use YouTube to workout? Who are your favorite Fitness YouTubers?

Namaste.

My Favorite Sunblocks.

I love sunscreen. Okay, well I guess I have a love/hate relationship with sunblock. I love that it protects my fair skin from the sun. I hate having to apply it and re-apply it. Since Summer is almost here, I decided to round up some of my favorite sunscreens.

sunblock1

Coola Suncare is amazing. On beach days, I like to apply their SPF 30 Cucumber Face Sunblock. I love the smell of it and it sinks into the skin nicely leaving it nice and smooth without a greasy sunblock look at the beach. I just noticed while perusing their website that they came out with a SPF 50 face! I’ll have to give that a try when my SPF 30 starts running out. On regular days that I’m not going to the beach, I always apply Burt’s Bees Renewal Day Lotion with SPF 30 to my face. I usually buy this at Target in person. I wear it on its own or layered under my makeup.

For my body, I kinda mix it up with different Coola Suncare products. I like the Citrus Mimosa scent and the unscented available (here, here, here, and here).  I’m not afraid to use baby sunscreen on myself. However, it’s important to note that the baby formula is thicker than their other sunscreens so it can get all over your swimsuit.  So, I’d suggest avoiding the baby sunscreen.  It looks like they have a cucumber smell available for the body too. I haven’t tried it yet, but I bet it’s good since the face one is. I like to order directly off their website because most other vendors don’t have as large of a selection. I love that their sunscreens go on nicely and are easy application for men with body hair. Application is a lot neater and blendable. During the summertime, I always apply sunblock to my decolletage and shoulders before leaving the house. Sometimes, I  will do more than that, but those are the places that collect sun as quickly as my face does.

For my hands on a non-beach day, I use the Supergoop Forever Young Hand Cream.  This is a great day time hand lotion. I keep one in my bathroom and one in my cubicle at work. I WANT TO BE FOREVER YOUNG. Since that’s not realistic, this hand cream is the next best thing. 😉

Another thing I’d like to note is that I did not include any eye creams with an SPF in it. The reason for this is because I have very sensitive skin and do not react well to eye products with SPF in them. If you’re not a delicate flower like I am, I suggest checking out Supergoop’s Anti-Aging Eye Cream. It has SPF 37 in it! What a great wrinkle prevention! I have to settle with large polarized sunglasses to protect my eye area instead.

One thing I’m still lost on is how to re-apply or touch up sunblock during the middle of the work day. If I apply my sunblock in the morning under my makeup and then go outside a few hours later on my lunch break, then the sunblock has worn off. My nose can get a bit red. I can wear a baseball cap for protection, but I’m on the hunt for maybe a SPF powder to touch up the face during a workday. Does this exist? I’ve googled before, but can’t find anything that exists with good reviews.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me regarding this. Thank you!

*Update! I just found this link with some suggestions I might try. I’ll report back later!

Getting Summer Ready.

Sweet summertime is approaching us in New England, so I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite Summer beauty products.  I’ve  become obsessed with Lush within the past year, so you will see a few of my favorite Lush products on this list of items.

Lush The Rough With The Smooth Body Scrub available here. This is a great exfoliating product for your body. I like to turn the water off in the shower, use it on damp skin, and then store it in a container with a lid. This is to prevent the running water from dissolving too much of the bar at once. This will make your skin silky smooth for Summer and is a fun treat for your body.

Kiehl’s Body Polish (not pictured) available here. This is another great exfoliating product for your body. I like to use it on the back of my arms for my Keratosis Pilaris, but it works great on your legs too. This smells very nice and is definitely a product that can be used year round.

Lush Pumice Power Foot Soap available here.  Like the body scrub, I like to keep this little gem in a container with a lid on top. I turn the water off in the shower, use it on damp feet, and then return it to it’s storage container with a lid.  Then I’ll turn the water back on to rinse my feet.  This will help keep your feet in good condition for sandal weather. After I get out of the shower and dry off, I apply the Lush Softy Foot Lotion available here to my feet. This takes the foot care a step further and helps keeps your footsies soft. I know feet can be easy to neglect, but you really shouldn’t neglect them.  No one wants to see your nasty feet in sandals. IMG_5315

I’m in love with the Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Shimmering Body Oil available here, here, and here. I didn’t realize it was sold in a perfume too, so I ordered that recently and have been disappointed with it. The perfume does not have the same beautiful smell of the shimmering body oil and doesn’t last as long either. The shimmering body oil is the way to go. It smells like Summer or vacation in a bottle (sun, sand, sunblock in a good way). Yes, it’s shimmery and part of you might fear you’ll look like you’re at a middle school or high school dance in the 90’s, but trust me it’s not that overbearing. I love this oil and will slather it all over my arms, decolletage, and legs. It’s also the first time I’ve ever worn a perfume and have been complimented by a stranger in public on it.

Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine Mist. Okay, I’ve definitely developed an obsession with Kevin Murphy hair products. My hairdresser introduced me to this brand and I wrote about some other products here. This shine mist just screams Summer. Shake the bottle and spritz some over your hair avoiding the top root area of your head. This can help tame flyaways, adds shine, and moisture. I think this could easily be used as a dry conditioner too.

What are some of your favorite Summer prep beauty products? I was thinking I should roundup some of my favorite sunscreens for another post! If you know me well, you know I LOVE sunblock.
