How To Get A Healthy Scalp.

I’ve suffered from a dry scalp on and off throughout the years. I never really liked the typical drugstore dandruff products because they have an overwhelming chemical smell to them and dry out my hair.  Here are a few ways and products I like to use to get a healthier scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar diluted with water. This is a nice affordable option. Mix it in a spray bottle with water and apply to your scalp directly over the bathtub. Be careful not to get it into your eyes or onto your face because it can burn. I’m not coordinated enough to avoid this, but maybe you can be. After I let this sit on my scalp for about 15 minutes or so, I’ll follow with my regular shampoo and condition routine. I usually just eyeball the apple cider vinegar to water ratio by filling up an 8 oz. spray bottle halfway or so with an even ratio of apple cider vinegar to water. I have a big head and lots of hair, so you may need less mixture than me. This results in a calmer scalp with less flakes and healthier, shinier hair!

A Heaping Tablespoon of Baking Soda mixed into my shampoo.  This one is very low maintenance and helps remove the buildup of dry shampoo. Mix about a tablespoon of baking soda with your shampoo between the palms of your hands and shampoo as normal working up a nice lather. I read somewhere that you shouldn’t dig your nails into your scalp and instead should use your fingertips to gently massage the products onto your head. Rinse and condition as your normally would.  This leaves the scalp feeling very clean and results in a softer blowout.

Moving onto the products you have to save your pretty pennies for.

Aesop Sage & Cedar Scalp Treatment can be applied directly to your scalp for up to 15 minutes before shampooing. The directions say to apply 5 drops directly to your scalp, but I tend to use more than that because I find that 5 drops is not enough product to cover my whole scalp. I will start by brushing my hair and then apply the drops to my scalp directly and gently massage it in for a minute or so. After 15 minutes, it’s time to shower and proceed with your regular shampoo and conditioning routine. If you love the smell of Sage like I do, then you will love this. It’s a very calming smell and even my husband commented on “that great smell” when I had the mask in my hair. It leaves my scalp super calm, clean, and happy plus I noticed healthier locks after use! I love this and think it will definitely be a staple in my beauty cabinet for years to come. It’s a lot more enjoyable than my makeshift Apple Cider Vinegar treatment and yields better results.

Aesop Rose Hair & Scalp Moisturising Masque  can be applied to your hair after shampooing. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it out. This is good for a healthier scalp and moisturized locks. I tend to save this as a special mask to do on weekends when I have some free time on my hands.  Believe it or not there doesn’t always seem to be time for this on the weekends, so it’s more of a production to use. However, it’s definitely great for the hair and scalp and worth trying!

Kevin Murphy Young Again Masque is to be used after you shampoo and before you condition.  My hairdresser recommended this product to me because I was complaining about my dry scalp, frizzy , and thinning hair. This product has great reviews online and I’m hoping it will help restore my hair to better condition with more frequent uses. You can’t really go wrong with Kevin Murphy hair products and I highly recommend trying some of his other great products that I blogged about here and here.

Christophe Robin Cleansing Mask With Lemon is a product I have been eyeing for-ev-er and was lucky enough to get it as a free sample from Sephora recently.  It can be used as a Shampoo and there’s a lot of different ways to use it, so I suggest finding what works best for your needs. I really LOVE this stuff and haven’t been able to stop playing with my hair after I did the Aesop Scalp Treatment followed by Christopher Robin Shampoo and Kevin Murphy Angel Hair Conditioner.

Now, I will admit I have always been lazy when it comes to my hair. Blowdrying it can take 20-30 minutes with a good T3 blowdryer or even longer if I really want to do an awesome blowout. I have to be at work by 8AM and just can’t bring myself to wake up at 5am to blowdry my hair in the morning.  That being said, I still believe it’s important to take good care of it, so that’s what I’ve been doing.  What are some of your favorite ways to maintain a healthy scalp? Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions about the products or routines.  Thanks!

Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Face and Eye Masks.

shiseidoSomething happens to you when you turn 30. You look in the mirror and realize your skin isn’t  as young and vibrant as it use to be. You up your skincare game a bit and then a year goes by, you turn 31 and realize things just keep getting worse. This is how I’ve been feeling since I turned 30.  To help me fight the you’re not in your twenties anymore blues, I’ve started to use the Shisheido Retinol Face and Eye Masks. I found these masks by the rave reviews on the Sephora website and decided that I needed to give them a try for myself.

The Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Intensive Revitalizing Face Mask makes you look like you’re dressed for Halloween while wearing the mask, but the results are worth it. Simply follow the instructions in the package (applying mask to clean skin), leave on for 15 minutes, peel the two sheets off, gently massage any excess into your skin and then follow your nighttime skincare routine of moisturizers/eye cream, etc. I noticed my skin is a lot brighter and tighter after using this mask . It even looked more radiant for days after use which is an added bonus. I feel like it gave my skin a more youthful, healthy glow and love the results from this mask. I also read that Katie Lee likes to use Shisheido face masks and she is gorgeous, so I knew this had to be a winner.  I would definitely recommend this product if you’re in the market for something like this. More information from the company website:

The Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask slowly diminishes wrinkles around the eye area over time. The skin appears a little more youthful and wrinkles reduce a bit after each mask use.  I notice more of a result each time I use this.  To use, I wash my face, pat dry, apply my face serum, wear the eye mask for 15 minutes, peel off,  gently tap in any excess around the eye area, and then follow my normal skincare routine of eye cream, moisturizer, and face oil.  It’s important to note that this does not help fight bags under the eyes. At least not for me. I strictly see results against fighting Wrinkles.  More information from the company website:

As I’ve mentioned before, I have very sensitive skin so I do not do these face masks more than once a week. If I do the eye mask one week, I will not do the face mask that week too. I’ll wait until the next week to do the face mask. Retinol also makes you sensitive to the sun, so you should only use these masks at night and make sure you use a good SPF the next day. I make sure not to use these masks if I know I’ll be outdoors a lot that week with a lot of sun exposure. Since these are pricey masks and my skin is so sensitive, I tend to only do two a month to stretch my dollar further. Both of these masks help fight wrinkles and provide a more youthful look to my face, so I think these are definitely worth the splurge.

A September Update.

This past week has been a bit busy, but in a good way.  We went to a wedding in Maine on the 10th, saw Adele in Boston on the 15th at the TD Garden, then spent all of last weekend in Hull for a family weekend.

The wedding was a lot of fun. Too much fun is what I told the concierge upon checkout. 😉

My dress is by Flynn Skye available here.

Adele was so unbelievably amazing. It was the best concert and performance I’ve seen in my life and totally worth the expensive price tag because it was the best experience I’ve had all year and the most fun I’ve had in long time.   I think the last time I had so much fun is when I went to Iceland in May of 2015. Adele is so talented and I absolutely love all her songs, her voice, and that she is a positive female role model for women and girls.  It sends a message that you can be successful without fitting a specific mold of what the media tells you to be. Granted she definitely has an image, but at least it’s not a scantily clothed stick figure one. Okay, okay, enough about that. My college major in Communication is coming out. If you’re lucky enough to have the chance to see Adele, then DO it. She is the best. Listening to her CDs on repeat the past few days has me yearning to go back to London! I can’t find any affordable airfares at this moment though.

A view from Nantasket Beach last weekend. I had a wonderful weekend spending quality time with family which is something I truly cherish.

Hoping to have a new beauty post up this week and that you’re all enjoying these last days of Summer!

My Favorite Eye Makeup Remover ~ Om Aroma Co Organic Coconut Pre-Cleanse Oil.

Say goodbye to face wipes that are harsh on your delicate eye area and gunky cold cream that leaves eyelids feeling clogged and cloudy. Say hello to my favorite eye makeup remover  The Om Aroma & Co Organic Coconut Pre-Cleanse Oil.  I’ve mentioned before on the blog that using plain Coconut Oil upsets my Blepharitis and makes my eyes feel cloudy.  This Om Aroma Oil effortlessly removes eye makeup without pulling the skin or aggravating it. I apply a couple of drops to the palm of my hand and then gently massage it around my eye area with clean fingers to remove my eye and brow makeup. I then dip an oval shaped cotton pad into the remaining oil on my hands and pat it around my eyes to remove the rest of the eye makeup. After this is done, I follow my normal nighttime skincare routine of washing my face, applying serum, moisturizer, and oil, etc. It looks like the company is switching names, so don’t be confused if you click on my link above and it takes you to

Here are additional product details from The Om Aroma Website:omeyeoil

I’m very lucky and never really had a problem with short eyelashes, but definitely feel like this oil used in conjunction with my favorite top lash mascara helps keep them in great condition.  It’s also worth noting that a bottle of this oil will last you several months so you don’t need to worry about $32 worth of product running out fast. Eye makeup removal is almost effortless with this product and feels very hydrating and silky smooth. I recommend this to anyone that wears eye makeup and cares about what ingredients are put on your face. It’s especially great for people with  sensitive skin and eyes like me. Trust me and try it. It will change your eye makeup removal routine for life.  Comment below with what your favorite eye makeup removal products are.

Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel.

The Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel  is a wonderful luxury cleanser for your face.  It’s a rich gel that comes out of the bottle in a beautiful salmon color. After removing my eye makeup at night, I simply apply two pumps of this gel onto my palms and massage it into the dry skin of my face.  You will notice the salmon colored gel turns into more of a clear oil while doing this.  Next, I add a little bit of water to create a light white foamy texture and remove it with a warm muslin cloth or facecloth and warm water.  After this is done and my face is dry, I follow my normal night time skincare routine which can vary. I don’t necessarily use this gel everyday because the price is a bit steep, but keep it on rotation with Tata’s Nourishing Oil Cleanser.

According to the bottle, these are the directions for use: Massage onto dry skin until melted into an oil.  Add a little water to emulsify and remove with warm water or damp muslin cloth.  Caution: Avoid direct contact with eyes. Rinse with warm water if contact occurs.  So I’d say I use it as instructed.

I really love this cleansing gel and wish it was more accessible to get in the U.S.  It leaves my skin feeling clean, silky, smooth, and calm while being able to remove my makeup. I feel like my skin looks so luminous after using it and I should also mention some of the great perks that are listed on the OSKIA website that I pasted below!

If the details above haven’t convinced you to splurge yet, then just picture yourself indulging in this luxury after a long day of work and how great it will make you feel. I consider my nighttime skincare routine as a way to relax after a long day. I leap for joy on the inside when I see that little pink gel come out of the bottle to wash my face.

Little White Dress.

My friends hosted a White Party at their house to celebrate the long weekend and it was a lot of fun!  They did such a great job decorating and the food was good too. It’s always fun getting together with friends for a party.

I wore this Twelfth Street white dress(was purchased on sale), with my Sam Edelman sandals, and MAC Matte Lipstick in Be Silly. I love this dress and these sandals because they’re comfortable and cute at the same time. I hope you’re all having a nice long weekend too and soaking up these last bits of Summer while they last.

Urban Decay Cooling & Hydrating Chill Makeup Setting Spray.

I’m sure most women reading this are familiar with the feeling of despair when you look in the mirror sometime after lunch and notice that a lot of your makeup from the morning has come off or no longer looks fresh. I was having this problem a lot, so I started using The Urban Decay Cooling & Hydrating Chill Makeup Setting Spray (available here, here, and here).  This spray is specifically targeted towards people with dry skin. I find this particularly great to use year round because it cools the skin and helps prevent makeup melting off your face during the hot summer months. It also helps keep makeup on your face for a longer period of time. I definitely notice more product staying on my face for a longer period of time which is a plus in my book! IMG_6132

It’s important to note that Urban Decay also has another makeup setting spray (available here, here, and here). I used this before I discovered the Cooling Spray. I switched to the cooling spray because it’s developed for drier skin which I have.

Have any of you tried a makeup setting spray? Comment below with your favorite! I’d love to hear what you suggest.

My Morning Skincare Routine.

I love when bloggers and vloggers share their skincare routines with the world, so I thought it’d be fun to share my current morning skincare routine before I apply any makeup.IMG_6141I start by washing my face with the Jurlique Soothing Foaming Cleanser (available here and here).  This is  like a non-budget friendly Cetaphil and aims to help sensitive skin and people prone to redness like me. I really love how this gentle cleanser works on my skin. It leaves my skin clean and soft.  I’ve been using the same bottle since the beginning of May, so you definitely get months of use out of it.

Once my skin is dry, I apply a pump of the REN Anti-Redness Serum (available here, here, here, and here). You can read more about my experience with this serum here, but overall it helps decrease my skin’s reactive redness habits throughout the day which is a winner in my book. It doesn’t eliminate it all together, but definitely helps a lot. While this serum sets into my skin, I carefully apply the Andalou Natural Eye Gel to my eye area (available here, here, and here).  This comes with a roller ball, so it can take some finicking with the tube to get the product to come out. I’m not 100% in love with this product because I don’t feel like it does much, but I’m just using up the tube while I save money for some day time eye creams I really want. It does leave my eyes moisturized enough though, which is what really matters. Once this is rolled on, I gently tap any excess into the eye area with my finger and then rinse my hands with cold water and dry them off.

If my face serum is fully settled in, I’ll start to apply about three pumps of the Burt’s Bees Face Moisturizer with SPF 30 to my face (available here, here and here – I usually buy it in person at CVS or Target). Sometimes I will apply it to my neck and decolletage too. This seems to do the job for me and can be layered under my makeup without peeling.

After this is all done, I go do my thang like get dressed and eat breakfast. Then, I’ll pat three drops of the Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate to my face and decolletage (available here, here, and here). This is a luxuriously refreshing oil to apply to your face and I absolutely LOVE it. It’s definitely a must for any beauty junkie.

The finished product below after  all of that. Now my skin is ready for makeup if I choose to wear it.  🙂

I know this sounds like a lot of lotions, potions, and serums. I think it is, but skincare is very important and I do notice a difference from each product I’m using.
